Program Overview

Abbotsford Community Services in collaboration with the Canada Revenue Agency hosts an annual, free tax preparation service for eligible Abbotsford residents, 55 years of age and older, modest income and with simple tax returns.  This is a volunteer based program where volunteers have various roles to assist clients in filing their taxes.  The tax program is from March 1st to April 30th, Monday to Friday by appointment only.

This year we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to take on the part of Income Tax Screeners who can join our team.  If you enjoy working in a social setting, helping people, organizing and managing the intake tasks please apply.


Income Tax Screeners Activities & Tasks

  • Greeting clients and ensuring they have the appropriate tax information for the tax preparer
  • Schedule appointments for income tax clients
  • Retrieve phone messages from potential clients
  • Determine eligibility of clients
  • Assist other tax volunteers as required
  • Maintain client confidentiality and information encountered in the process of completing duties
  • Follow operating policies and procedures for the taxation service
  • Report questions or concerns to the Income Tax Service Supervisor/Lead Volunteer
  • Attend mandatory training hosted by the CRA, in collaboration with ACS

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • A good understanding & familiarity of Canadian tax laws and relevant taxation documents as they relate to marginalized communities
  • Good communication and positive interpersonal skills an asset
  • Sensitivity to the needs and challenges faced by older adults in our community
  • Able to commit to at least 2 months for this year’s tax service; ability to commit to annually for program development is an asset

Mandatory Training and Orientation

  • Orientation to ACS’s tax program, policies and procedures
  • Canada Revenue Agency training

Schedule and Commitment

  • Able to commit to at least one shift per week and/or multiple shifts available for the 2 months is appreciated
  • Hours of Operation for the Tax program is – Monday to Friday 9:00a.m. To 2:00p.m.
  • Attendance to a CVITP webinar and orientation in February are mandatory
