Description of Volunteer Opportunity: Adult Volunteer Tutor

As a tutor you will mentor adults in our community, including adults returning to complete academic goals, and adults with other learning goals who would appreciate a little help from someone else. Learners typically request assistance with reading, writing, or math upgrading, or help if they have learning disabilities.

The program has a “learner centered” approach, where learners and tutors work on goals as decided upon by the learner. Learners and tutors work together one-on-one, in pairs or small groups (online or in person).

This is generally done in a one-to-one setting where the tutor and learner meet in a public space, for example, a local library.

Matching learners with tutors, is part of the work of the Adult Learning Services Coordinator. The matching process takes into consideration the preferences, skills and availability of learners and tutors, as well as the needs of the organization.

Ongoing resources and support are provided to the tutors by the Adult Learning Services Coordinator.

Qualifications Needed: Must be 19+ years of age and live in the Chilliwack area.

Commitment Required: 1-2 hours/weekly.

Benefits to Volunteer:  Volunteering allows you to utilize your skills and abilities while you are helping others. Spend as little as an hour a week supporting a learner to meet their goals while you are connecting with people in your community! Attend an annual appreciation event.
