Abbotsford Bibles for Missions Thrift Store

Who we are: In the fall of 1988, two gentlemen from Chilliwack, BC joined the Bible League’s ministry tour to India. The economic situation in India greatly impacted both men and left them with a desire to help the people of India.

Upon returning to Canada they became involved in discussions with the Director of Bible League Canada about ways to help them help others. They ultimately established a thrift store, with the purpose to donate the net revenue to Bible League Canada.

Subsequently, they approached friends from an affiliated church in Abbotsford to also set up a thrift store. This local group agreed and incorporated in order to secure a lease. Shortly after, the Abbotsford group opened the second Bibles for Missions store. Because the Abbotsford location incorporated at the outset, it operated independently of the BFM Foundation, but in close association through shared goals and values.

Subsequent to the Abbotsford store opening, BFM Foundation continued to open more stores under the BFM name.

Recently, Bibles for Missions stores underwent a name change and became Mission Thrift Stores. They have now grown to over 50 locations across the country but continue to operate independently of ABFM Thrift Store.

Volunteer Opportunities: Our thrift store volunteers sort the donations, price and sell the items selected. We have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities available including but not limited to: Cashiers, Greeters, Sorters, Pricers, Delivery drivers, Receivers and Merchandisers. Our volunteers offer their talents and interests to make a difference at home and abroad. We believe that Christians should use their gifts to make a difference in God’s world and are happy to do our part to see the kingdom of God grow and ultimately prosper!

Qualifications: Most positions within our thrift store require a great attitude and willingness to serve. There are special requirements for delivery drivers (for insurance purposes) but otherwise we encourage volunteers to sign up and let us know all of the areas within our store they feel they would be able to make the biggest impact. We then do our best to place them accordingly.

Commitment: We encourage new volunteers to commit to a weekly 4-hour shift to start. Of course more hours are welcomed but we do not want to overwhelm anyone either! Let us know how much time you have to offer and we’ll do our best to work with your schedule.

We offer:

Flexible scheduling

A great faith based working environment

A clean, healthy friendly environment where lifelong friendships have been (and continue to be) made!

Experience working in a variety of different departments

The ability to obtain volunteer hours for school or other programs

A yearly volunteer appreciation banquet

Please feel free to reach out for more information or for a volunteer application form! We look forward to hearing from you.
