Human Services Career Enrichment Program (HSCEP) Volunteering Opportunity:

What?

HSCEP is a school-based program offered in Chilliwack and involves three community partners – Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley, UFV, and the Chilliwack School District. It was designed to create and inspire connections within the social service community for high school students in gr 10 -12 while also providing rich educational and hands-on learning experiences. There are two components of this opportunity (8-9 Saturday sessions from Sept to May & supervising one 8-week BSER group during the school day if available).

Who?

This program is a multi-level mentoring program, where volunteer mentors support and encourage the high school students in gr 11 and gr 12 who get to practice their social service and mentoring skills by going into local elementary & middle school classrooms to teach younger students about important resiliency skills. This part of the program is called “Building Social Emotional Resiliency”. Mentors can be from any walk or life or field of study, however, those involved in and/or have experience in social sciences (social work, education, psychology, criminology, child and youth care, etc.) may be of particular interest.

When?

Approximately once a month for 8-9 full Saturday session from 9am-2:30pm. BSER placements take place during the school day, once a week for 8 consecutive weeks.

Where?

All Saturday sessions take place at the Neighbourhood Learning Centre (attached to Chilliwack Secondary School) except one session in Winter 2024 which will take place at the UFV Chilliwack campus.

Why Get Involved?

HSCEP program creates a positive environment for young people to develop positive social outlets, build social-emotional resiliency skills, and create developmental assets needed to help them navigate into their adult lives. By volunteering as a mentor, you help to inspire and prepare the next generation of “natural helpers”!
