Hello! Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Canuck Place Children’s Hospice in Abbotsford, BC!

Canuck Place Children’s Hospice helps give short lives the gift of great days. We provide pediatric palliative care to children 0–19 with life-threatening illnesses and journey with families during uncertain times. With our team of compassionate clinical experts, we support families to make lasting memories and live life to the fullest. We provide pain and symptom management, medical respite care, grief and bereavement counselling. There is art and education, music, play and recreation therapy. And we provide loving end-of-life care. All at no cost to families.

Volunteering at Canuck Place

As a Canuck Place volunteer, you help families create lasting memories. Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. Without this dedicated group, we couldn’t provide the exceptional care and comfort families count on.

If you are compassionate, enjoy working with children, and have a desire to work alongside our clinical teams to provide quality care and make joyous memories with our children and families, please apply to volunteer with us!

Our volunteer community includes students, working professionals, stay-at-home parents, retirees, and everything in between! We welcome volunteers with varying backgrounds and experiences, and value the diverse skills and perspectives they bring. No previous experience in healthcare is needed to apply.

At this time, we are only accepting applications for Peer Volunteers at our Abbotsford location (32772 Marshall Rd.) and conduct onboarding cycles on an ongoing basis.

Peer Volunteer

Peer volunteers support our Family Volunteers and professional care teams. They provide general companionship to the children staying at our hospice by reading aloud, doing arts and crafts, playing computer games, going on field trips with our recreation therapy team, etc. Peer volunteers also work closely with the siblings of in-house children and may assist the clinical staff in running errands. Peer volunteers must complete a 2.5-hour Canuck Place training program and commit for a minimum of 1 year of weekly or bi-weekly shifts.

Qualifications needed:

Must be 16 years of age of older
Patient, collaborative, adaptable, and respectful of children and families
Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills
Must be able to commit to at minimum 1 year of service on a weekly or bi-weekly basis
Healthcare experience is an asset but not required as we know for many applicants this may be your first volunteering role!
